WHY EACH ONE OF US NEEDS TO TAKE ACTION

"Those who profess to favor freedom, yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightening. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will."

-- Frederick Douglass

Northeast Citizens for Responsible Media was formed to reassert those freedoms which each of us possesses by virtue of our existence.  As the U.S. governmentÕs definition of a Òfree pressÓ (which weÕve incorporated into our mission statement) foretells, without access to accurate honest information from a wide range of independent sources we are rendered powerless; unable to govern ourselves.

Our founders understood that only the availability of the widest range of information in the hands of the people could keep tyranny at bay. The tool we were given to prevent what has now happened in this country was a constitutionally protected press, free to serve as a watchdog over those weÕd elected, investigating the lies and bringing the people the information they needed to be self governing.  WeÕve lost that tool.  Corrupt government policy has permitted corporations to steal our air waves and enjoy monopoly control, in exchange for which those corporations have abandoned their constitutionally intended responsibility to serve the peopleÕs interest.

Northeast Citizens for Responsible MediaÕs goal is to spread the type of independent information our corporate sponsored media refuses to provide while also bringing awareness to the consequences of irresponsible media.  All around us we see the rise of a lawless fiefdom actively destroying every cornerstone of constitutional law that this country was built on. Our government, employing a willing media as its mouthpiece, uses fear and lies Р seeking to destroy all who dissent. They have taken control of every branch of government, eliminated checks and balances and placed themselves above the law. They have taken over the counting of the votes, thus creating that permanent faction the founders warned us of.

The existing corporate media system, whose interest is not the people but the maximization of profit, rely on the government to ignore previous policies enjoining the concentration of power and hence can be counted on to do the governmentÕs bidding. They are a critical factor in the decline of democracy.

Now at this extraordinary moment in our history, in which our very existence as a free people is threatened, it is only We the People who can take back that which the Founders understood was critical to our existence as a free people Ð a free press. It is time to hold the media accountable to us again and to insist on our inalienable right to information.  Without a free press, we cannot expect to be a free people.  We must reclaim that which will serve the people or suffer the loss of our freedoms.
